About SUSTAINABILITY AT GONZAGA UNIVERSITY

Jim Simon joined Gonzaga University as its first Director of Sustainability after serving Buffalo and Western New York in various professional and volunteer capacities. At Gonzaga, Jim is working to add capacity to our missioned goal of being a climate neutral campus by 2050. Through engaging the campus and the community in new and different ways, foster a culture of sustainability that is resilient and responsive to the dynamics of higher education and our changing world. Jim’s favorite food is New York style pizza, which he’s found to be imitated well in the PNW by Big Mario’s Pizza in Seattle.

Gonzaga University is deeply committed to environmental stewardship, integrating sustainability across campus operations, academics, and community engagement. The University has pledged to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, with interim goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20% by 2020 and 50% by 2035, based on 2009 levels.

In academics, Gonzaga infuses sustainability principles throughout its curriculum. The Cataldo Project collaborates with faculty to embed sustainability into courses, fostering research and learning that address environmental challenges.

Through these comprehensive efforts, Gonzaga University strives to create a campus culture that prioritizes environmental health, social justice, and the well-being of future generations.
